Jolly Tar Jim

Jack Tar was a term used for members of the merchant marines and the Royal Navy, and subsequently used as a general name for all seafarers and the men who went to sea. The suffix "tar" became a popular term for a sailor, and likely derives from the word "tarpaulin," the canvas material coated with tar to make waterproof clothing worn by sailors.

Each miniature in the Wee Forest Folk collection of Jolly Tars captures the raucous spirit and close camaraderie of these 'jolly' shipmates.
